Border Collie coat colour is the visible result of pigment type, pigment distribution and pattern genes, not a single trait. A black and white dog and a blue merle dog can carry the same working lineage, and the difference lies in how eumelanin and phaeomelanin are produced and arranged across the body. Because colour is inherited in combinations, describing a dog accurately means separating what is seen from what is carried, and that distinction matters to owners, breeders and rescue volunteers alike.

What pigments and patterns are visible in a Border Collie coat?

Two pigments set the base. Eumelanin produces black, and its diluted forms produce blue (grey) and lilac when combined with brown. Phaeomelanin produces red and yellow tones, from deep red to cream. The classic Border Collie is black with white markings, but the breed standard and the wider population include brown (often called chocolate or red), blue, lilac, sable, brindle, tricolour, and the merle patterns.

Merle is a pattern rather than a colour. It dilutes random patches of the base coat, producing blue merle on black and red merle on brown, usually with darker patches and sometimes with tan points. Merle is also associated with health risks when two merle dogs are bred together, which is one reason colour documentation is not a cosmetic exercise. Brindle lays dark stripes over a phaeomelanin base, and sable describes hair that is tipped with dark pigment, often shading from the back toward the legs.

The "ee red" or recessive red dog is genetically black or brown based but cannot produce eumelanin in the coat, so it appears red, gold or cream. It may still have a black nose or dark eyes, which is a useful clue that the dog is not a true brown. Tan points, sometimes called "copper," appear as markings above the eyes, on the cheeks, chest and legs, and are common in tricolour dogs.

White is a marking pattern, not a pigment. Border Collies can carry white on the muzzle, blaze, collar, chest, legs and tail tip. Extreme white, sometimes called "white factored," can cover most of the body. The genetics of white markings are polygenic, which means the amount of white is not predicted by a single test. How do coat length and grooming follow from the coat a dog has?

Border Collies come in two coat lengths, rough and smooth, and the difference affects daily care more than colour does. The rough coat is medium to long, with feathering on the forelegs, chest and tail, and a dense undercoat that sheds seasonally. The smooth coat is shorter and lies closer to the body, with less feathering, but it still has an undercoat.

Grooming follows the undercoat rather than the topcoat. A rough-coated dog needs brushing two to three times a week, and daily during the spring and autumn sheds, when the undercoat blows in tufts. A smooth-coated dog needs less frequent brushing but still benefits from a rubber curry or slicker to remove dead undercoat. Bathing is usually needed only every six to eight weeks unless the dog works in mud or water.

Colour does not change grooming requirements, but it changes what owners notice. White areas show dirt and skin problems clearly, while black and blue coats hide dirt but show dandruff and sun bleaching. Merle coats can make skin lesions harder to spot under the mottled pattern, so routine hands-on checks matter more than visual inspection alone.

How is Border Collie colour documented and tested rather than guessed?

Documentation starts with a written description: base colour, pattern, white markings, eye colour and nose colour. That description is a phenotype, the visible dog. Genotype is the set of alleles the dog carries, and it can differ from what is seen. A dog that looks black may carry brown, and a dog that looks red may be genetically black with two copies of the ee mutation.

DNA tests are available for several loci. The B locus distinguishes black from brown. The D locus distinguishes black from blue dilution. The M locus is linked to merle, and the K locus controls whether a dog can express brindle or solid eumelanin. The E locus covers the ee red. These tests are sold by commercial laboratories, and results are usually reported as genotype pairs, such as B/B, B/b or b/b.

Testing is not a substitute for observation. Merle testing in particular requires care, because some merle alleles are not detected by every assay, and a dog that appears solid black can still carry merle. Breeders who test usually combine results with pedigree information and, where relevant, with eye examinations, since merle is associated with deafness and ocular defects in some combinations.

What do eye and nose colour tell you about a dog's genotype?

Eye and nose colour are phenotype clues that narrow the possibilities. A black-based dog usually has a black nose and dark eyes. A brown-based dog usually has a brown or liver nose and amber or lighter eyes. A blue dog often has a slate or greyish nose, and a lilac dog has a dilute brown nose. An ee red dog can have a black nose, a brown nose or a dilute nose depending on the other loci it carries.

These clues are not definitive. A dog with a black nose can still carry brown, and a dog with a brown nose is not automatically ee red. Nose colour can also change with season or age, a phenomenon sometimes called snow nose, which is a temporary loss of pigment rather than a genetic change. Eye colour in merle dogs can include blue, marbled or odd eyes, and this is a pattern effect rather than a separate colour gene.

Why does colour documentation matter for breeders and rescue volunteers?

For breeders, colour documentation supports informed pairing decisions. Breeding two merle dogs is widely discouraged because of the risk of double merle puppies, which are more likely to be deaf, blind or both. Knowing whether a dog carries merle, even when it looks solid, changes the pairing. Knowing whether a black dog carries brown changes the expected litter colours and helps new owners understand what they are getting.

For rescue volunteers, colour documentation supports accurate listings. A dog described as a "blue heeler cross" may be a dilute Border Collie, and a dog described as "red" may be an ee red black dog. Accurate descriptions reduce returns and help adopters choose a dog whose coat they can maintain. Coat length and undercoat density matter as much as colour here, because a rough-coated dog in a hot climate needs different care from a smooth-coated one.

How should a colour description be written for a Border Collie?

A useful description follows a fixed order. State the base colour first, then the pattern, then the white markings, then eye and nose colour, and finally coat length. An example: black and white, rough coat, full white collar and blaze, black nose, dark eyes. Another: blue merle, tricolour, smooth coat, white chest and feet, slate nose, one blue eye.

Keep phenotype and genotype separate in writing. If a dog has been tested, record the results as genotype and note the laboratory. If it has not, say so. Avoid terms that imply certainty, such as "pure" or "true," unless a test supports them. This habit makes records comparable across litters, kennels and rescue files, and it prevents the common error of treating a visual guess as a genetic fact.

Colour in the Border Collie is a practical subject, not a decorative one. It affects how a dog is described, how it is bred, how it is groomed and how it is matched with a home. Treating it as a documented trait rather than a guess keeps those decisions grounded in evidence.
